The Australian indigenous people are among the oldest on earth, many believe their culture to date back more than 35,000 years. Although traditionally nomadic, many of the tribes now permanently live on remote rural communities 'supported' by modern services. The shift in their culture hasn't been without its problems. Many argue the breakdown of traditional customs is due to Western influence; alcohol being an especially destructive and damaging factor. However, on the surface, younger generations in these communities appear unaffected. In fact, many experience a life which is easily romanticised from a Western perspective. There is a powerful sense of the importance of family and an intuitive connection to the surrounding environment that resonates whilst visiting these communities which highlights a growing sense of disconnection and alienation in our own culture. These images were taken in the Anmatjere region of the northern central desert of Australia.
