The “separation barrier” is a concrete wall which is (in parts) over twice the height of the Berlin Wall, is over 720kms long and has been under construction since 2002. The wall not only divides communities on a physical scale but is cause for strong divided international opinion. The Israeli government claims that its presence will protect its citizens and nearby communities from militant attacks, providing both Israeli and Palestinian citizens the freedom to live side by side in relative peace. The reality is that families are cut off from families, farmers are cut from their land and those citizens who previously had direct access to community facilities such as healthcare and education are now often faced with a difficult and arduous journey. At best the separation barrier can only serve as a reminder of our recent past.
